Browne, Schlossberg Strive to Keep Children Safe on and off School Buses

HARRISBURG, APRIL 16 – State Rep. Mike Schlossberg (D-Lehigh) and state Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Pat Browne (R-Lehigh) are spearheading a legislative effort aimed at curtailing the issue of vehicles illegally passing school buses in Pennsylvania. Both legislators have introduced identical companion bills.

Senator Browne, who introduced Senate Bill 1098, said the legislation is designed to place stop arm cameras on school buses to catch drivers illegally passing school buses.

“Protecting students as they get on and off of the school bus is critically important,” Browne said. “Parents shouldn’t have to worry about the safety of their children traveling to and from school.”

Rep. Schlossberg, sponsor of House Bill 2225, said unfortunately some motorists ignore the flashing red lights and stop signs on school buses.

“Every day, thousands of Pennsylvania students take the bus to school,” Schlossberg said. “Our children’s safe arrival to and from home is on the minds of parents, bus drivers and teachers so we must keep them as safe as possible during their daily journey.”

The Lehigh County legislators said stop arm cameras would allow police to use technology similar to red light cameras to capture violations and issue traffic citations. This legislation would not mandate that cameras be installed, but would just allow for them to be used.

“This legislation provides police with an additional tool to allow them to identify and reprimand those who fail to follow the law and stop for school buses when the red lights are flashing and the arm bar is out,” Browne said.

Browne and Schlossberg said the legislation was inspired by a constituent who saw people illegally passing school buses in Allentown, brought it to their attention and showed them what other states are doing to address the problem.

“We already have laws on the books to keep our kids safe when they are getting on and off the school bus, now we need to make it easier to enforce those laws and this legislation will make that possible,” Schlossberg said.
