Allentown Housing Project Receives $1.8 Million GrantPHFA funding to build 26 new homes, rehab four others A proposal to construct 26 new townhomes and rehab four existing homes recently received $1.8 million in funding from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA), according to state Senator Pat Browne (R-16). "This is outstanding news for the City of Allentown and all of the groups that are working to develop this housing initiative on North Street," Senator Browne said. "This grant provides significant capital for this worthy project that will increase the stock of quality affordable housing available in the city. I appreciate the support that PHFA is providing for this major housing project." Nine of the 26 new homes are currently under construction on the south side of the 400 block of North Street. Five homes each contain three bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths. The remaining 21 new homes will each have four bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths with 2,200 square feet of living space. The four rehabilitated homes will each contain three bedrooms and two baths with approximately 2,000 square feet of living space. Sales prices for the three bedroom homes will range from $100,000 to $110,000 and the four bedroom homes will sell for $109,000 to $120,000. Overall, the project is budgeted at $8.9 million with funding provided by the state Department of Community and Economic Development, Lehigh County, the City of Allentown, the Harry C. Trexler Trust and the Century Fund. The project is expected to be completed in January 2010.
