Allentown recycling program rewarded for
performance
City receives $504,759
state grant based on 2003 collections
The City of Allentown received a $504,759 state grant as a reward for
its highly-successful recycling program, announced state Senator Pat
Browne during a press conference he co-hosted today (August 12) with
Allentown Mayor Roy C. Afflerbach.
Speaking at the Allentown Recycling Center, Senator Browne said the
city received the Recycling Performance Grant Program money from the
state Department of Environmental Protection based on the community's
overall collections during 2003.
"This grants shows that recycling is working in Allentown," Senator
Browne said. "The Recycling Performance Grant Program is intended to
reward communities for their efforts. The substantial size of
Allentown's grant shows that recycling pays off by preserving our
environment and in funding from the state. This grant is a tribute to
the city under Mayor Afflerbach and to the recycling efforts of
residents and businesses."
Mayor Afflerbach said the city appreciated the state's efforts to
promote and support municipal recycling programs.
"During state budget negotiations this year, the possibility of
eliminating or reducing municipal recycling grants became a very real
possibility," Mayor Afflerbach said. "Thanks to vigilant legislators
like Senator Pat Browne, who recognize the value and necessity of these
grants, they were preserved and over half a million of the state tax
dollars of Allentown's residents are coming back home to help offset the
costs of solid waste collection and recycling."
