Senator Browne Helps Get Grant
for City
Will Allow Irving Pool to Remain Open
State Senator Pat Browne, R-16th District, along
with state Representatives Steve Samuelson, D-135th
District, and T. J. Rooney, D-133rd District, and
Allentown Mayor Roy Afflerbach, held a press
conference today, Wednesday, May 18, to announce a
state grant that will allow Irving Street Pool to
remain open.
Senator Browne and Representatives Samuelson and
Rooney requested a community revitalization grant of
$25,000 from the Department of Community and
Economic Development (DCED) to underwrite the cost
of keeping open and maintaining the Irving Park Pool
for the summer of 2005.
"Given the city's financial constraints, it was
important for the state to help in the effort to
keep the pool open this summer for the children and
families of East Allentown," Senator Browne said.
"Without this grant money, the pool would have been
closed this summer."
The Irving Park Pool – located at Irving Street
and East Tilghman Street – was to be closed this
summer due to the city's budget constraints, but
Senator Browne, Representatives Samuelson and Rooney
and Mayor Afflerbach have worked to make sure the
residents of East Allentown have a recreational
place to go this summer.
